Book Summary John begins his day by entering the kitchen where his mother, Elizabeth, and younger brother, Roy, are arguing about Gabriel, the boys' father. Roy is upset because he doesn't feel that he has the type of relationship with his father that he should. John is going through a very difficult time in his life.

As if adolescence alone were not traumatic enough, he is confronted by a number of other dilemmas. First and most important in John's life and in the novel is his relationship with his father, Gabriel, who appears to harbor some sort of hostility toward John.

The long, unbroken opening section of Go Tell It on the Mountain presents the action from the meditative standpoint of an adolescent with a much-burdened mind; there is a lot going on in his life and in this book. John finds himself engaged in several fundamental struggles that.
